Bangladeshi expat with little blood flow to brain undergoes life-saving surgery

The sixty-year-old has been experiencing difficulties such as dizziness, blurring of vision, headaches, and recently fell down from a motorbike following a head spin

Dubai: A 60-year-old Bangladeshi expat has undergone a life-saving procedure here at a private hospital after being diagnosed with severe and multiple blocks in the arteries supplying blood to the brain.

An employee at Dubai municipality, Layqot Ali, was diagnosed with severe occlusion in the carotid arteries by doctors at Aster Hospital, Qusais. Carotid arteries are major blood vessels in the neck that supply blood to the brain, neck, and face.

According to the diagnostic reports, there were severe blocks in the carotid arteries of the patient, posing a severe threat to life.

Fall from a motorbike

A chronic smoker and hypertensive, Ali has been suffering from dizziness, blurring of vision, and severe headaches for over a year. Recently, he fell from a stationary motorbike near his residence at Qusais.

“I was sitting on a motorbike. Suddenly, I felt my head spinning and fell crashing to the ground. My friends, who were around, picked me up, and it took me some time to regain consciousness,” recalled Ali. The incident triggered him to consult a doctor.

Multiple blocks in arteries

On 29 June 2022, Ali consulted Dr. Sandeep Burathoki, consultant interventional neuroradiology at Aster Hospital, Qusais.

Suspecting severe occlusion of carotid arteries, the doctor ordered a catheter angiography to confirm the diagnosis. The test result was shocking.

“There is a pair of carotid arteries on both sides of the neck. Ali had a 100 percent block in one of his arteries. Two other arteries had 90 and 80 percent block, respectively. So, there was little blood flow to his brain, causing dizziness and other problems,” said Dr. Burathoki.

It is a miracle that Ali did not suffer a stroke with such severe blocks in all the arteries, the doctor added.

“He came to the hospital and diagnosed the condition at the right time. Otherwise, the consequence could have been fatal. Reinstating blood flow to the brain was critical. So, we subjected him to an endovascular procedure to remove the blocks using a stent. The procedure was a success, and Ali responded to the treatment well,” explained Dr. Burathoki.

No complaints post-surgery

Ali underwent the procedure on 30 June 2022. He stayed in the hospital for two days and got discharged on 2 July 2022. He was advised to rest for a week.

Post the procedure, Ali is doing well and does not experience any of the previous complaints. “Earlier, it was difficult for me to pray or even wake up from bed. I used to feel drowsy and felt like my head is spinning. I had to wait for some time for the uneasiness to go away. Now, I am doing good. I do not experience any difficulties now. Thanks to Dr. Sandeep and the staff at Aster Hospital, Qusais, for their exceptional care and guidance,” he said.

Smoking and hypertension

Ali was a chronic smoker and hypertensive. According to the doctor, in Ali’s case, these lifestyle defects could have been the risk factors. He advises people to have an active lifestyle and avoid smoking completely to keep similar diseases at bay
